Infill 101
Infill is the granular material that's brushed down between the blades of artificial turf after installation. It's not decorative — it's doing four critical jobs at once. It weights and stabilises the turf so it doesn't shift or wrinkle. It supports each blade so the pile stands tall instead of matting flat.
It protects the fibre tips from UV and traffic wear — a properly infilled lawn lasts noticeably longer. And depending on the infill you choose, it can control pet odour, resist compaction in high-traffic zones, or slow a putting-green ball roll to a true, consistent stimp.
Skip it, or use the wrong type, and even the best turf will underperform. The good news: you really only need to pick from three professional-grade options — and we'll help you match the right one to your yard.

Rule of thumb: most residential backyards take about 2 lbs of infill per square foot. Dog and medium-traffic zones sit at 2–3 lbs, playgrounds run 2–4 lbs, and high-traffic / sports areas climb to 3–4 lbs. Use our calculator below for your exact bag count.
Our Infill Range
Every turf type is engineered for a specific performance need. Here's what each one does, when to choose it, and what it costs.

$ — most economical
The workhorse. Economical, proven, everywhere.
Best for: residential backyards, DIY installs, budget-conscious jobs.
Washed, kiln-dried round-grain silica sand is our most common infill. It weights the turf, keeps blades upright, drains quickly, and is completely inert. Round grains resist compaction better than the sharp construction-grade sand you'll find at big-box stores — that difference is what makes it last.

$$$ — premium
Absorbs ammonia. The gold standard for pet areas.
Best for: dog runs, back yards with pets, kennels, rooftop pet relief areas.
Zeo Odour is a naturally occurring volcanic zeolite with a microporous structure that traps ammonia from pet urine at the molecular level. Rinse the turf periodically and it refreshes itself. Nothing else on the market controls pet odour like it — and it doubles as a cooling infill in hot high-traffic zones.

$$$ — premium
Non-compacting infill for high-traffic and sports.
Best for: playgrounds, sports lanes, dog daycares, commercial entrances — anywhere rubber crumb used to go.
Turf Armor is an engineered, non-compacting infill built to survive relentless foot traffic. It replaces rubber crumb in high-traffic sports and play areas — cleaner, cooler, and it won't pack down or migrate. The pile stays upright even under sustained load, and the surface drains and rinses like new.

$$ — specialty
Weighted for a true, consistent ball roll.
Best for: backyard putting greens, chipping pads, practice turfs.
High-density round-grain silica applied at a specific rate to tune green speed. Get the fill depth right and your green rolls true and stimps consistently. Get it wrong and putts skip — we'll spec the rate for your green size and pile height.
Shop Putting-Green Silica →Why Infill Matters
Some installers cut corners on infill to shave the quote. Here's exactly what you give up when they do.
Without infill, pile mats down within a season. With it, the turf springs back and looks freshly-brushed for years.
Infill adds ballast, keeping the turf from shifting, wrinkling, or lifting.
By shielding the base of each blade, infill measurably extends the useful life of your turf.
Zeolite traps ammonia at the molecular level — the biggest single upgrade for any home with dogs.
Round-grain infill sits between blades without clogging, letting rain drain straight through to the base.
Non-compacting infill keeps sports and play areas performing under sustained load.
Match by Situation
| Your situation | Our recommendation | Why |
|---|---|---|
| I have a dog (or multiple) | Zeolite (Zeo Odour) | Absorbs ammonia at the molecular level — the clearest win in the whole infill lineup. |
| Kids play area with impact zones | Turf Armor | Non-compacting under constant traffic — replaces rubber crumb without the heat or mess. |
| Standard residential lawn, no pets | Round-grain silica sand | Proven, economical, does the job perfectly for most yards. |
| High-traffic area that also runs hot | Zeolite + Turf Armor (mix) | Turf Armor keeps the pile from packing down; zeolite pulls heat and odour out of the surface. |
| Yard with poor / slow drainage | Turf Armor | Doesn't compress, so water drains freely and weeds have nothing to root into. |
| Rooftop or balcony install | Silica sand (weight ballast) | Weighs the turf down; low-dust; won't stain pavers. |
| Backyard putting green | Putting-green silica | High-density, weighted for a true consistent ball roll. |
| Commercial / strata / sports lane | Turf Armor | Handles heavy foot traffic without matting — engineered for sustained load. |

Calculating Infill Quantity
Infill quantity depends on three things: your square footage, the pile height of your turf, and how much traffic the surface will see. Enter your details and we'll estimate the range instantly.
Any Premium Grass Blades order includes a written infill spec for your job — we'll confirm the exact bag count and rate based on your turf model and pile height.
Getting your infill right is more important than picking a specific brand or type. Under-filled turf mats down. Over-filled turf drains poorly. We'll spec the exact amount.
Installation
Whether we're installing for you or you're DIYing with our materials, the process is the same.
Base is compacted, weed barrier installed, turf rolled out, seamed, and secured with nails/staples around the perimeter.
Infill is spread evenly across the surface — usually with a drop spreader. Rate depends on pile height and infill type.
A power broom works infill down into the base of the pile until it settles between the blades. This is what gives the turf body.
Once brushed in, blades stand tall, the surface feels soft, and the turf is ready to use immediately.
